Cocoa Programming for OS X Aaron Hillegass, Adam Preble & Nate Chandler Book Review Score: ★★★★★ 5/5 stars

Covering the bulk of what you need to know to develop full-featured applications for OS X, this edition is updated for OS X Yosemite (10.10),  Xcode 6, and Swift. Written in an engaging tutorial style and class-tested for clarity and accuracy, it is an invaluable resource for any Mac programmer. The authors introduce the two most commonly used Mac developer tools: Xcode and Instruments. They also cover the Swift language, basic application architecture, and the major design patterns of Cocoa. Examples are illustrated with exemplary code, written in the idioms of the Cocoa community, to show you how Mac programs should be written.

After reading this book, you will know enough to understand and utilize Apple’s online documentation for your own unique needs. And you will know enough to write your own stylish code.

  • Out of date

It appears to be abandoned and is seriously out of date. To bad, this was a very good book when it came out.

This is the best book I’ve found on this subject. It requires time and patience to use properly. Read it and do the exercises as you go along. Do the challenges. Figure out how to adjust the code in the book to match the latest changes in Swift using the book’s website and forums (this is actually very educational). It is understandable that the book is out of sync with the latest and greatest; Swift is evolving rapidly. Highly recommended if you want to learn enough to build real applications on Mac OS X using Swift.

The Big Nerd Ranch has an exceptional style. iOS is saturated with current books, but OS X programming is hard to find, even more so in the new Swift language. Although this is in Swift 1, the cocoa library hasn’t changed, and they have uploaded the minor changes. Visit their site, in the forum for this specific book, under then general discussions board for the update. I bought this book for $20 more than what is listed here when it first came out and I don’t regret spending one penny.
