Kathryn J. McDonagh, R.N., CNAA, FACHE, FAAN, is president and chief executive officer of CHRISTUS Spohn Health System in Corpus Christi, Texas, a six-hospital system that serves South Texas. Ms. McDonagh has been serving the healthcare field for 30 years. She has filled both clinical and administrative roles, including registered nurse, nursing director, senior vice president, and chief operating officer. Prior to coming to CHRISTUS Spohn, Ms. McDonagh was president and chief executive officer of Saint Clare's Health Services in northern New Jersey. In addition, Ms. McDonagh served as the founding president and chief executive officer of Saint Joseph's Mercy Care Services, a subsidiary of Saint Joseph's Health System. During her tenure at Saint Joseph's, Ms. McDonagh helped pioneer the system's shared governance model. Ms. McDonagh is active in many professional organizations, including the American College of Healthcare Executives, the American Academy of Nursing, and the Women Health Executives Network. Her work in healthcare and her leadership have earned her numerous awards, including a Telly Award for creating and hosting a national cable show called "Focus on Health"; a Fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing; and the YWCA Academy of Women of Achievement Award. She is the editor and publisher of Nursing Shared Governance: Restructuring for the Future and is the author of many journal articles and the book Patient-Centered Hospital Care: Reform from Within.
