“The reader comes to understand Molly’s worldview, and to sympathize with her longing to be accepted—a quest that gives The Maid real emotional heft.”—The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice)

“Think Clue. Think page-turner.”—Glamour

In development as a major motion picture produced by and starring Florence Pugh

Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by.

Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection.

But Molly’s orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what’s happening, Molly’s unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black—but will they be able to find the real killer before it’s too late?

A Clue-like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different—and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.

  • A Perfect Story

As far as Summer reads go, this is a fantastic book. Its story lulls along at a perfect pace, and my, what a story! The characters are perfect, especially Molly, the main character, who is by far one of the best written characters I’ve seen in a while. The way the story ties back into her Gran with her euphemisms is fantastic and pushes the story forward to an amazing twist at the end. The friendships are key in the story, and the mystery is waiting to be unfolded!

Good easy read. Insightful and graphic as to the mind of a person with Molly’s personality. I thoroughly enjoyed the read. Too many bargain reads don’t live up to the challenge of keeping us engaged and interested. This was a pleasant surprise.

Was really hoping to get into this book but never really did - writing was very simple (like the main character) who i found a bit annoying — with her literalness of everything. Her naïveté to life around her was hard to believe. But it was an easy read while on vacation which was why i gave it 3 stars.
  • The Maid is a good beach read.

This is a light book with a simple story where good ultimately triumphs over evil.

Good story. Great character development of Molly. It’s an easy read but not as phenomenal as all the hype. An average book

I finished this in five hours and my jaw is on the floor. There are twists and turns down to the very last page. This is by far the best book I’ve read in a very long time. 10000/10 recommend

An interesting book with many a twist and turn. Molly was a fascinating character who was far more intelligent than those in her world gave her credit for being. But there’s elements of this story that didn’t sit well with me. That might be why I put it down for so long. I wanted to love this book, but it just wasn’t in the cards for me.
