Se hai bisogno, chiama raccoglie tanto i racconti postumi, quelli su cui Carver stava lavorando poco prima di morire, quanto quelli giovanili, pubblicati su piccole riviste all'inizio degli anni Sessanta e a volte addirittura sotto pseudonimo. Si scoprono cosí due Carver ugualmente sorprendenti, che possiedono, però, una medesima luce: quella in grado di illuminare «ciò che ci rende e ci mantiene, spesso a dispetto di grosse difficoltà, riconoscibilmente umani».
