The Babbling Brook Naked Poker Club: Book One Ann Warner Book Review Score: ★★★★★ 5/5 stars

A morose parrot with a reputation for biting perches in a small cage in the lobby of Brookside Retirement Community. For Josephine, a reluctant resident, he sums up the place which friend and handwriting expert, Lill, has dubbed Babbling Brook (in honor of the missing waterway and the more exasperating residents). However, Brookside turns out to be more interesting than Josephine expected, as it becomes the setting for art theft, other dodgy dealings, and…naked poker. Investigating the unusual events, Josephine and Lill befriend Devi Subramanian, a young woman Josephine tries to prevent from making the same mistakes she has made.

I almost skipped this based on the publishers description but some of the reviews and the 4 1/2 stars convinced me to take a chance. I’m so glad I did. My grandmother and goofy gaggle of girls would definitely approve the antics these senior citizens find themselves in. Enjoy!
  • Surprised at how much I loved this story.

I downloaded a sample of the book and enjoyed chapter 1 so much I kept on reading. When I realized that chapter 2 was a “different voice” I was suddenly unsure, but that chapter was continuing the development of such an enjoyable story I took the plunge and downloaded the rest of the book. I don’t regret that for a second. Surprisingly one of the things I love about this book is the “different voice” chapters. The author is so skillful that each “voice” rings individually true. Each character is masterfully developed and several of them have well woven arcs. Well done. I am anxiously awaiting Book 2’s availability in Apple Books.

I wish I had the words to express how warm and hopeful the book made me feel. This is a story to savor. It was as smooth and delicious as the 30 year old scotch Ann wrote about. I fell in love with the characters. I especially enjoyed the way the book was written using each characters perspective.

I had a feeling I’d like this book because of the title. It I a really great read. The characters and the story were meant to be together! I was into the story from page one. And the pages just kept turning....... This is a pleasant novel despite the truth that is possible from fiction. I’m thrilled there’s another book with the same setting!
