Bless Me, Ultima Rudolfo Anaya Book Review Score: ★★★★★ 5/5 stars

This coming-of-age classic and the bestselling Chicano novel of all time follows a young boy as he questions his faith and beliefs -- now one of PBS's "100 Great American Reads."

Antonio Marez is six years old when Ultima comes to stay with his family in New Mexico. She is a curandera, one who cures with herbs and magic. Under her wise wing, Tony will probe the family ties that bind and rend him, and he will discover himself in the magical secrets of the pagan past--a mythic legacy as palpable as the Catholicism of Latin America. And at each life turn there is Ultima, who delivered Tony into the world...and will nurture the birth of his soul.

The winner of the 2015 National Humanities Medal, Rudolfo Anaya is acclaimed as the father of Chicano literature in English and for his rich and compassionate writing about the Mexican-American experience.

Well over 12 years ago when I was in Community College, I was assigned to read this book for a college level reading preparatory class. I kept putting it off about the book report/essay i was supposed to write for this book as a final assignment. When it was one week away for the report to be due, I finally started reading it on a Saturday morning. The first couple chapters draw you in, so by that Saturday evening, I felt I was halfway through the book. I was amazed at how fast I read through the book by the time Sunday evening came. I was kicking myself because I should've read the book sooner so I could've maybe read it at least twice to write a real good report/essay. Anyway, I turned in the report/essay and I was quite impressed with the feeling I had about the book. Definitely a life changer for me in the sense that, be careful about the path you choose in life, beware of the consequences! The book was very sad on some parts but overall great book. Now I am excited to see the movie!
