Book Review and summary Island of the Blue Dolphins Scott O'Dell

Far off the coast of California looms a harsh rock known as the island of San Nicholas. Dolphins flash in the blue waters around it, sea otter play in the vast kep beds, and sea elephants loll on the stony beaches.

Here, in the early 1800s, according to history, an Indian girl spent eighteen years alone, and this beautifully written novel is her story. It is a romantic adventure filled with drama and heartache, for not only was mere subsistence on so desolate a spot a near miracle, but Karana had to contend with the ferocious pack of wild dogs that had killed her younger brother, constantly guard against the Aleutian sea otter hunters, and maintain a precarious food supply.

More than this, it is an adventure of the spirit that will haunt the reader long after the book has been put down. Karana's quiet courage, her Indian self-reliance and acceptance of fate, transform what to many would have been a devastating ordeal into an uplifting experience. From loneliness and terror come strength and serenity in this Newbery Medal-winning classic.

In celebration of the book's 50th anniversary, this edition has an introduction by Lois Lowry, Newbery Medal-winning author of The Giver and Number the Stars.

I am a 7 year old second grader, when I started this ebook I did not like it. But by the end of this ebook I loved it quite a lot. The story developed from a slow start and accelerated to a very good ending. The story is told in the first person and captured my attention by making me feel like I was there, adventuring from island to island. The book was so touching that I do not have a favorite part. I would recommend the book to people who enjoy a very touching adventure.

This book could be very depressing. But, it was outstanding and had a great way of showing how brave and strong woman are. Scott O’Dell has an amazing way of writing, and this was (so far) the greatest book I have ever read other than to Kill a Mockingbird. I recommend this for so many reasons. I have no complaints.

A book that will teach you how small you really are, it'll teach you to look harder at things around you. Scott O'Dell is easily my favorite author, and this is easily my favorite book. Pick it up if you haven't, it's short, I read it in about two days.

was great, I don't see why it would be confusing for a fifth grader, I read it in fifth grade and it is now my favorite book of all time, even though she has to survive, it doesn't feel like a survival book to me, it is a very awesome story and I would recommend it to anyone who likes good books I hope that this helped you, like I said it is an awesome book😉😊

I am not trying to be mean but this book was terrible. I kept thinking that if I read more it would get better but that never happened. It was so boring. There was never any cliff-hangers or any exciting parts. Eventually I just stopped reading the book.
