Island of the Blue Dolphins Scott O'Dell Book Review Score: ★★★★★ 5/5 stars

Far off the coast of California looms a harsh rock known as the island of San Nicholas. Dolphins flash in the blue waters around it, sea otter play in the vast kep beds, and sea elephants loll on the stony beaches.

Here, in the early 1800s, according to history, an Indian girl spent eighteen years alone, and this beautifully written novel is her story. It is a romantic adventure filled with drama and heartache, for not only was mere subsistence on so desolate a spot a near miracle, but Karana had to contend with the ferocious pack of wild dogs that had killed her younger brother, constantly guard against the Aleutian sea otter hunters, and maintain a precarious food supply.

More than this, it is an adventure of the spirit that will haunt the reader long after the book has been put down. Karana's quiet courage, her Indian self-reliance and acceptance of fate, transform what to many would have been a devastating ordeal into an uplifting experience. From loneliness and terror come strength and serenity in this Newbery Medal-winning classic.

In celebration of the book's 50th anniversary, this edition has an introduction by Lois Lowry, Newbery Medal-winning author of The Giver and Number the Stars.

I’m in 6th grade and still reading, but when I read my assigned pages,I just want to fall asleep while reading it.I have to read it even though I don’t want to.It was kind of hard to read because it doesn’t have any short words in it like I’m.Instead it has I am.Boring.DO NOT waste your time on the book.No exciting parts.Sorry to offend anyone.😒😕

I loved this story. The writer made you feel as though you were there with on the island yourself. I was so engrossed that I did not put the book down until I finished it.

I am a 7 year old second grader, when I started this ebook I did not like it. But by the end of this ebook I loved it quite a lot. The story developed from a slow start and accelerated to a very good ending. The story is told in the first person and captured my attention by making me feel like I was there, adventuring from island to island. The book was so touching that I do not have a favorite part. I would recommend the book to people who enjoy a very touching adventure.
  • Amazing Story

By It's good get it please
This book could be very depressing. But, it was outstanding and had a great way of showing how brave and strong woman are. Scott O’Dell has an amazing way of writing, and this was (so far) the greatest book I have ever read other than to Kill a Mockingbird. I recommend this for so many reasons. I have no complaints.
