The Restless Wave John McCain & Mark Salter Book Review Score: ★★★★★ 5/5 stars

In this candid new political memoir from Senator John McCain, an American hero reflects on his life—and what matters most.

“I don’t know how much longer I’ll be here. Maybe I’ll have another five years. Maybe, with the advances in oncology, they’ll find new treatments for my cancer that will extend my life. Maybe I’ll be gone before you read this. My predicament is, well, rather unpredictable. But I’m prepared for either contingency, or at least I’m getting prepared. I have some things I’d like to take care of first, some work that needs finishing, and some people I need to see. And I want to talk to my fellow Americans a little more if I may.”

So writes John McCain in this inspiring, moving, frank, and deeply personal memoir. Written while confronting a mortal illness, McCain looks back with appreciation on his years in the Senate, his historic 2008 campaign for the presidency against Barack Obama, and his crusades on behalf of democracy and human rights in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Always the fighter, McCain attacks the “spurious nationalism” and political polarization afflicting American policy. He makes an impassioned case for democratic internationalism and bi-partisanship. He tells stories of his most satisfying moments of public service, including his work with another giant of the Senate, Edward M. Kennedy. Senator McCain recalls his disagreements with several presidents, and minces no words in his objections to some of President Trump’s statements and policies. At the same time, he offers a positive vision of America that looks beyond the Trump presidency.

The Restless Wave is John McCain at his best.

This isn’t the man I once voted for. Read like leftists wrote it for him. Too many jabs at conservatives. Very disappointed in McCain and the book.

Regardless of your political leanings, this book describes what it should be like to be an American leader. It is too bad we can’t make fine works like this be required reading for those professing to govern us all. Senator McCain, I didn’t vote for you because of platform reasons but I congratulate you now on the fine person you have always been and the amazing gift you have in conveying messages we all need to hear. I will recommend this book to everyone who will listen to me so we can, maybe, just maybe, get a few more people to the middle 60% and away from the outside 20’s. If reading The Restless Wave has even a little impact on that effort, all of your fine work will be well worth it. Please get well and stay with us as long as you can. Larry M. • Civility and Compromise

Senator McCain was really able to explain and break down things that he was involved in during his time in the service and the Senate. I truly believe as he does that as Americans we have more in common than we have different. I hope as he does that we can get back to being civil to each other even if we disagree on different issues.

America is great because of great people like John Mccain. Shame on those who call him a traitor. One of the icons that has risen above the petty politics and stood up for the greater good of the country. One of the finest books I have read.

I am a Democrat.......from way back a couple years ago when parties worked together to make “America Great”. It’s no longer that way. John McCain comments on this as well as his personal successes and failures. John McClain, one of the few true gentlemen of either party left in politics. MA beautifully written memoir/educational text. An honest, sincere man and a hero. I wish he had of been president instead of what we have ended up with in 2016. I am afraid he is a dying breed. Our politics are changing rapidly and not for the better. People are too quickly judged and dismissed by which party they belong. We have a President hell bent on dividing us and confounding our proported allies. God help us or our Democracy will be delegated to the dust bin of history.
