Excelsior by Jasper T. Scott read book description online

The year is 2790 AD: with space elevators and giant orbital fleets hovering over Earth, open war looks inevitable, and people are anxious to get away.

The lines are drawn, with the Confederacy in the East, and the First World Alliance in the West. In hopes of finding a refuge from the looming war, the Alliance is sending Captain Alexander de Leon to explore an Earth-type planet, code-named Wonderland, but at the last minute before launch, a Confederate fleet leaves orbit on a trajectory that threatens both the mission and Alliance sovereignty. The resulting power struggle will determine not only the fate of Alexander's mission, but the fate of the entire human race.

This was a pretty good book that keeps you in the action, very interesting with many good plot twists and a lot of dramatic irony.

Great story with just the right pace. Even with back and forth in time and location, had no trouble keeping up. Very imaginative descriptions in Wonderland.

  • Great story

I love the stories but there is something about the writing style that throws me off and I don't like it. I can't tell if it's the over necessary details or the fact that a lot of things are repeated that don't need to be. The story is great though.

Good characters. Good pace. Liked the storyline and creativity in futuristic dramatization of America. Story dragged a bit during chapters in Wonderland but not unusual for novels with multiple story lines. I appreciated that the author stayed with one story line long enough to flesh out what was happening. Other authors I have read tend to be too choppy when managing multiple storylines.
  • Ambitious, hard to put down

    By Dukeman1965
Excelsior is an ambitious effort that quickly develops a believable future where new technologies cast a familiar light on current social issues and Cold War geo-politics. I usually shy away from this type of sci-fi because of the politics, however Mr. Scott does an excellent job of telling the story of a starship crew, those they left behind and there separate and shared adventures. Excelsior has more than enough action, intrigue, space ships and alien worlds to satisfy.

Immediately captured my imagination and kept building to the end. So many new ideas in what could be a very crowded genre. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
