Book Review and summary The Lady's Slipper Deborah Swift

'Compelling and intriguing, this is a well-told story full of wonderful prose and surprising events.' -- Romance Reviews Today

When English artist Alice Ibbetson discovers a rare orchid, the lady's-slipper, she is captivated by its beauty and fragility. It is the last surviving specimen and she wants to paint it and tend it for future generations.

But she is not the only one who wants the flower - a herbalist wants it for its medicinal properties, and a ruthless landowner hopes that, like the tulip craze, it might restore his ailing fortunes. And pitted against them all is Richard Wheeler, the handsome man of new-found faith, whose searing honesty causes more danger than any deceit.

Soon Alice finds herself caught up in a web of danger, treachery and unexpected passion.

A story of drama, intrigue and romance set in 17th century England.

Shortlisted for the Impress Prize and the Salt Lake City Readers Award.

This historical novel introduces the reader to the Puritan era of English history and combines loves, hate, obsession and religious fervor. Truly an enjoyable read.

Glad this was a free book. Could not finish it. Seemed more about religious strife than about the glorious lady slipper orchid.

Lovely tale with many twists and wonderful rich characters. One feels they are “there” during the trials and tribulations suffered by so many, and the happiness won by same. Very smooth and has such grace going from chapter to chapter. A must read.

Deborah takes you to 1660’s England and immerses you in the times, ways, scents and tastes of place. It is beautifully written and full of interesting and unexpected turns. I rarely cry at the end of a book, but this one got me. I highly recommend it - a very satisfying read.
