Beartown by Fredrik Backman read book description online

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove returns with Beartown—an instant New York Times bestseller—about a forgotten town fractured by scandal, and the amateur hockey team that might just change everything.

People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semi-finals, and they actually have a shot at winning. All the dreams of this place now rest on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys.

Being responsible for the hopes of an entire town is a heavy burden, and the semi-final match is the catalyst for a violent act that will leave a young girl traumatized and a town in turmoil. Accusations are made and, like ripples on a pond, they travel through all of Beartown, leaving no resident unaffected.

Beartown explores the hopes that bring a small community together, the secrets that tear it apart, and the courage it takes for an individual to go against the grain. In this story of a small forest town, Fredrik Backman has found the entire world. “Like Friday Night Lights, this is about more than youth sports; it’s part coming-of-age novel, part study of moral failure, and finally a chronicle of groupthink in which an unlikely hero steps forward to save more than one person from self-destruction” (Kirkus Reviews).

Conclusion: We hope you will enjoy this book. We rated it with 5 stars from 5.

Enjoying this author immensely! I love the flawed characters... and that we get to experience a bit of life with them. Enjoyable read...can’t wait for the next book!

To start with the book is much, much too long. There are too many characters with small side stories and so much repetition of the hockey theme. I loved A Man Called Ove and was sure this was going to be another good one, but I really did not enjoy this book and flipped through many pages to get to the end. Very disappointing.

So I read A Man Named Ove and loved it so I read Britt-Marie Was Here and loved it more so of course I got Beartown. Initially I didn't like it at all. There wasn't a beloved character. In fact, none of the characters were especially compelling. The story itself unfolded much in the same way the other two had, bit by bit, but without the beloved character it just seemed slow. Then it hit and oh my. Every second mattered after all. This one is different, though, so beware. It is deep and dark and real. It is happening. Read it.

This is my first time reading Mr Backman, but will certainly not my last. His unique story telling and character development are second to none, even Jodi Picoult. Poignant characters are carefully woven into a story that could be about any small town in any country. This is not a "hockey" book, it is a beautifully crafted story full of life's lessons and life's learnings.
